STEPS TO STARTING YOUR OWN BLOG: NUELLA IGWE GUIDE

I have been receiving emails from my viewers concerning how to start blogging, how it works, and so on. So I thought at last to write a post sharing my experience and some tips on what I have learned so far.

Let’s ride!

What is blogging all about? Before starting a blog you need to learn the basics, so you can have an idea of where you are going and what you are doing.

Blogging is all about the mind and determination. You need to be ready physically and mentally to blog – if you don’t have the passion to blog, it won’t work out fine and you won’t enjoy it.

Blogging is something you enjoy and loves doing just like a hobby, blogging is a hobby. It allows you to reflect, share opinions and discuss various topics and let readers share their thoughts.

Before I started blogging, I write my thought in my footnote and in some other blogs too (never knew it was actually guest posting). I never knew I could have my own site and domain until I discover I can actually be a blogger too.

Let’s leave the story for another day and focus on what we have.

Steps to starting your own blog

Identifying your niche

What is a niche? A niche is an area you choose to concentrate on and write about.
Many bloggers didn’t discover their niche until they spent Months blogging and learning the basics.

The initial plan I had in mind when I first started blogging was to write about sexual abuse and violence because of the high rate of rape in my country.

Later I discovered that I can actually do all that in my niche but in a different way.

So, I changed the whole pattern of the topics I planned to talk about into motivating and encouraging people.

My niche/topic centers on lifestyle and relationships. This blog aims to inspire, encourage, motivate and lift the world from falling, giving up, demotivated, facing challenges, and so on, with life lessons, dreams, success stories, life struggles, hustles, and my journey so far in life and why we should continue living, love ourselves and be happy at all time.

Choosing a Name

Choosing a name is sometimes difficult because you may get stuck finding that unique name that could earn you traffic and income.

When I wanted to start my own blog, I didn’t know the name to pick, and again I didn’t want to use names that already existed and popular.

So I finally decided to use my name “nuellaigwe” to end all the confusion.

However, in other to choose a name you have to understand the following:

  • Check if the name you are about to pick is not already existing.
  • Choose your own name or name that you are identifying with.
  • Go with an easy name – I mean a name that is easy to pronounce and spell on search engines.
  • Pick a name that explains what your blog is about.

Pick a blogging platform

Personally, I’m using WordPress not because I don’t like blogger or any other blogging platform but because it is easy to use and the themes are incredibly great for different niches.

WordPress has a support team that you lay complain about and they help you tackle that issue you are having.

I recommend WordPress to anyone who is about to start a blog, especially for newbie bloggers.

If you are choosing a blogging platform, first of all, look at its features, pros, and cons so you don’t regret it in the end or get confused in the process of blogging.

Get a webbing Host

Web hosting is the starting point of a blog if you really want to be found on google and bing search engines, and you want to monetize your blog maybe later in the future.

Before starting a real blog, you have to buy a host on any host companies like Bluehost, Hostgator, etc.

Bluehost is one of the host companies I recommend for anyone who is about to start a blog.

It is a bit cheaper than other host companies which cost about $65 and it is the only host web that gives a free domain that lasts for a year, and other nice features Bluehost has.

Bluehost support service is always ready to hear your complaint and find the solution for the problems.

Blog starter tools

Your blogging won’t be complete if you don’t have the necessary tools.

The tools needed for bloggers are a phone or laptop, a blog planner for ideas, a good camera (necessary for fashion bloggers), a Footnote, and your pen to write your thoughts.

When you have all the tools needed then you can start blogging.

Blog Themes and Design

Designing your blog is very essential because it attracts visitors who visited your blog to return.

The first thing your visitors notice when they visit your blog is your great theme used in designing your blog.

You don’t need to be a web designer to beautify your blog.

WordPress made it easy for bloggers to design their own site using themes and templates to set the site up.

There are nice themes found on WordPress that charm your audience and draws them to your site.

WordPress themes have free and paid themes for lifestyle, fashion, photography, and other niches.
I have used pretty good themes which I liked but anytime I find a feature missing, I pick another theme.

Creating content

Finally, your blog is all set to start writing and publishing. Concentrate on building eye-catching, stunning, and original content.

Good content makes your audience return back to your site anytime you publish a new post. Don’t copy a post from someone else’s blog, that’s called “plagiarism”.

Focus on creating your own content but if you find yourself blank on ideas, you research to get ideas which when you are writing, you link or reference back to the site you got your idea from.

Write your first blog post and share it with your friends, acquaintances, family, admirers, teammates, co-workers, and all your social media platforms.

Extra things to note

  • Blogging is a gradual process, so don’t get demotivated and disappointed sometimes.
  • It takes patience and consistency to start getting noticed.
  • Share your blog on social networks (like Twitter, Quora, Instagram, Reddit, etc.) so people can visit and comment.
  • Visit other blogs and share your thoughts
  • Join Bloglovin to meet bloggers.
